I know this is two weeks over due. I can't believe I have been back that long. God was so good on this trip. He kept us all going even at our weakest points and He allowed us to give what little we had to bless the people of Honduras.
Here is a quick recap of the last few days of the trip:
Thursday, July 13th we took the bus to Comayagua to visit a Compassion Intl school. Three children in that project were sponsored by people on the trip and a fourth was sponsored by someone on the trip last year that we also got to visit with. I got to go with my friend Tim to see where his sponsored child, Carlos lived with his 5 brothers, mother, grandparents and his cousins who were orphaned. Carlos's dad passed away two months ago from an accident when he was riding his bike home from work. It was a humbling experience to see how hard the families work to be able to put food on their tables. http://www.compassion.com/
Friday:
We went to a new area to talk to people and pass out food and shoes. It was amazing that we had enough shoes for all of the people we talked to. One of our team members even gave away her own shoes. That night, we were able to go to small group (Bible Study) with the families we were staying with. The church has their small groups spread out across the valley so that people everyone will have a chance to attend even if they don't have a way to get to church. It was such a family atmosphere. We even had a three legged race :)
Saturday:
We split into three teams to deliver the beds we had made. I was able to go up a crazy steep hill with 12 of my comrades as we feared for our lives because of the Indiana Jones style path :) I went to the second house with half the group and met a woman with two children and an infant. She, her husband and the children all slept on a full size bed. We were able to give them one of the beds we had made. The house was made of mud with tiny boards. There was not a lot of ventilation or light.
After we visited that home, we went to the home of a little girl and boy who have been going by themselves to one of the small groups. When we entered, we found out that there are four adults living in the house with 11 children. I only saw two rooms off the living room and the living room had no furniture. We talked to the kids about how much Jesus loved them and prayed with them. Then we found shoes for them all although I think we gave one of the boys girl's shoes. They also received a bed.
We then went to a drug rehab center for men. It was good to visit these guys because they didn't have any hope and hopefully the visit gave them some. After all this was our free time to walk around in the town square.
Later that night we went to church. They normally have church on Sunday morning, but for the second time in the week, they moved it for us. Three of our trip members joined with the worship band there which was fun. The pastor talked about being bold in sharing God's love and Jim talked about the video where Penn Jillette said if you really are a Christian, why aren't you talking about it because it has eternal consequences to everyone who doesn't believe.
Afterward, we said a lot of our goodbyes to our friends and families.
Sunday we drove back to Tegucigalpa with much emptier suitcases. The plane started boarding as Pastor Marlon was paying our exit fees which took a little longer than planned,. Luckily the airlines waited for our group – it was down to the last seconds. When we got to Houston, we realized how thankful we were for simple things like running water and working toilets. We had a four hour layover so we all rested, ate food and called our families.
Now it is two weeks later and I definitely miss Honduras. People have asked me if I still want to go back even though I was sick and to me, it isn't even a factor in my desire to go back. The Honduran people are so welcoming, kind and generous. God is moving in the people there and I am humbled to have been used.
The message that we shared in Honduras was this: God is perfect and as humans, we are not and are separated from him. There is nothing we can do to earn God's favor (Romans 3:23) God loved us so much that He sent His son Jesus to die on the cross as the sacrifice for our sins because he was perfect (John 3:16). The Bible says whoever believes that Jesus is Lord and that He died for our sins is adopted into a relationship with God that will last forever. (Romans 10:9 & Romans 8:15-16)
