Jesus told another story: "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed . . ."
Have you ever actually planted a mustard seed? No? We haven't either. However, a recent foray into container gardening started us thinking about Matthew 13:31 (see above). Jesus was right (no surprise there!), growing things can teach us a lot about spiritual life.
Think about it: when you plant a seed, from our perspective it seems like nothing happens. What we can't see is what's going on below the surface and there's a LOT happening down there. That little seed is breaking open and a tiny sprout is pushing its way out and up to the sun.
When God plants a dream in our hearts, it sometimes seems like forever before anything happens to make that dream a reality. There's only so much we can do to encourage that dream to grow . . . often the only thing we can do is wait. (Don't you just hate that?) But remember: just because you can't see any progress doesn't mean your dream is not making progress. It may be quietly putting out roots, gathering strength, and getting ready to push through the surface and bloom in the light of the Son.
